Marc Small was born and raised in Akron Ohio and started his running career in middle school which leads to a lifetime of success in Track & Field/ Cross Country. Recruited out of high school, Marc received a scholarship to Tiffin University (OH) where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Management. After undergrad, he continued his education at Lake Superior State University (MI) gaining a Master’s degree in Curriculum & Instruction in 2008. At that time, he accepted his first full-time coaching job. While coaching at Lake State, Coach Small also hosted nutritional seminars and taught weight-training courses as an instructor in the Department of Recreational Studies.
Marc's coaching career quickly hit elite status in 2009 when he returned to his alma mater, coaching at that time the soon to be National Champs, Tiffin University. Coach Small was known as one of the top Sprint/Jump coaches in the nation as well as team Head Recruiting Coordinator working under National Coach of the Year Jeremy Croy. During his time coach Small continued instructing weight-training at Tiffin while teaching Business-Management courses.
In 2012 Coach Small moved to Wisconsin to head new cross country and track collegiate teams. To promote the sport of Track & Field, Coach Small voluntarily spoke at high schools in the Milwaukee and Chicago areas to educate prospective student-athletes competing at all levels. He worked passionately recruiting and volunteering to help prospective students find schools and schools connect with the right students. He states: "it doesn't matter how much a school wants a prospect or how much an athlete wants to attend a certain college; there's no way around it... it has to be a good fit!" That's the first statement Coach says to every recruit he's ever contacted. Over the last 15 years, Coach Small has recruited over 400 athletes from 36 different states and 12 countries.
After a ton of success in the mid-west, Coach Small made his way down to the Sunshine State in 2014 where he accepted the position of Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at Florida A&M University. Head coaching alongside Head Coach Dr. Moore on the women's side. Having pushed that team to its top performances within the past 10 years and coaching some of the top athletes in the nation: Coach Small was on a roll as the youngest Head coach in his conference by 10 years, not to mention having ALL his recruiting-classes averaged over a 3.25 GPA. "Coaching at FAMU was one of the biggest highlights of my career, with some of the most talented athletes I've ever coached with an elite/experienced staff to back me up! It was awesome and I loved every moment working with my athletes, staff, and those passionate alumni."
Coach also shared his expertise outside of the NCAA by establishing/introducing a new NAIA Keiser University brand to the world of Track & Field. As the Head Coach at Keiser located in West-Palm Beach, he built one of the strongest programs in the nation in only 2 years. Nominated for National Coach of the Year, and winning Conference Coach-of-the-Year with a Team Title in 2018, National Championship trophy and 3 individual National champions, Coach Small's athletes were able to set school and national records weekly. Including coaching a long jumper ranked top 10 in the world during the 2017 season.
With all this, Coach Small still has the drive to help other coaches by reviewing and preparing workouts for several top tier universities yearly. He helps start running clubs in nearby communities and universities to promote healthy living. He has the rage to work with individuals building healthy lifestyles, or people who just simply love to workout. He has the knowledge and skills to construct high-intensity speed, jump, or marathon training. While at the same time, he has the ability to coach athletes seeking sponsorship or pro contracts. Coach Small has a background of 25 years personally involved in Track & Field, running, biking, nutrition, and weight training; and professionally over 15 years working in all of the above.
Coach Small and his wife, Pricilla, have two children.
We at OTC are excited to start this program with him as our executive coach.
